Heat Illness Stand Down - June 4, 2013

water. rest. shade. The work can't get done without them.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2013 construction jobsites and other workplaces across Florida are asked to stop working for a few minutes, before starting work, and participate in the Safety Alliance for Excellence Stand Down on Heat Illness. This program was developed with the full support of OSHA, through our Alliance, and benefits employees working on construction projects or other workplaces throughout Florida.

Employees are better prepared to be safe workers after learning key safety topics the Safety Alliance for Excellence provides to superintendents, supervisors and others who are charged with leading a Stand Down in their workplace.
Materials can be downloaded below and were developed by the Safety Alliance for Excellence for all participating companies or organizations to be used for the upcoming Safety Stand Down.

What is a Stand Down?
Construction companies and other workplaces who know the value of safety training use a Safety Stand Down to stop all work and provide a focused safety toolbox talk meeting on all their jobsites or workplaces, on one day, on one particular topic. This meeting provides effective communication of safety policies, goals and expectations to all levels of a construction team and workplace employees.
While stand downs are commonly used in the military, they are not new to the construction industry. Many safety organizations across America regularly organize them for their contractor and workplace employees.
The Safety Alliance for Excellence and OSHA believe there is tremendous value in committing 10 - 15 minutes to one hour of your day's work to talk about safety, leading to increased employee safety morale. Stopping to talk about safety brings it to the forefront of everyone's mind! It is very important to communicate your firm's safety message to front line workers who constitute the largest group of our industry's workforce.
Why is the focus for this Safety Stand Down on Heat Illness?

The Safety Alliance for Excellence is a strong supporter of OSHA's campaign to prevent heat illness in outdoor workers. Summer months in Florida can be brutal on any employee who works outside, and heat illnesses can be deadly. Heat illnesses are preventable.
